Araneae is the taxonomic order of spiders, air-breathing arachnids with eight legs, venom-injecting fangs, and spinnerets that produce silk. It is the largest order of arachnids and ranks seventh among all animal orders in described species diversity. As of early 2026 taxonomists have documented roughly 53,680 spider species across 139 families, and family-level classification within the order remains actively debated.
