Net-Casting Spider

The net-casting spider, Asianopis subrufa, is a spider native to Australia and New Zealand, found in forests, woodland and heathland as well as on the walls of buildings, and until a 2020 taxonomic revision was classified in the genus Deinopis alongside its close relatives. Females measure about 25 millimeters and males about 22 millimeters, with females colored light reddish-brown and males marked with stripes. It is a nocturnal hunter with unusually keen eyesight for a spider, and instead of a fixed web it weaves a small rectangular net that it holds between its front legs and throws over passing prey such as ants, beetles and crickets; it poses no danger to humans.
