Abrocomidae, the chinchilla rats or chinchillones, is a family of South American rodents native to the Andes Mountains, comprising two extant genera, Abrocoma and the more range-restricted Cuscomys, plus an extinct genus, Protabrocoma. Despite soft, silvery-grey fur resembling that of chinchillas, their body structure is more like that of a short-tailed rat, and they are social, tunnel-dwelling and likely herbivorous.
