Emballonuridae, the sheath-tailed bats, is a family of insectivorous bats distributed through the tropics and subtropics of the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The family is named for the tail, part of which is enclosed in the tail membrane while the tip protrudes freely through a sheath, allowing it to slide as the membrane stretches in flight. Members roost in a wide variety of sites, including caves, hollow trees, and the undersides of leaves and buildings.
