Macropodidae

Mammal Families

Macropodidae is a family of marsupials in the order Diprotodontia that includes kangaroos, wallabies, tree-kangaroos, wallaroos, pademelons, and the quokka. As of 2025 the family holds sixty three recognized living species, native to mainland Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, and nearby islands. The name macropod means large foot in Greek, reflecting the group large hind legs, long powerfully muscled tails, and distinctive foot structure with an enlarged fourth toe, a fused second and third toe, and usually no first toe; most macropods are herbivorous grazers with teeth adapted to tough grasses and sedges.
