Neomonachus

Neomonachus is a genus of true seal, family Phocidae, comprising two species, the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, which inhabits Hawaiian waters, and the extinct Caribbean monk seal, which historically occupied the Atlantic and Caribbean regions. The genus was established in 2014 after researchers determined the Hawaiian and Caribbean monk seals were sister species, deeply divergent from the Mediterranean monk seal, warranting separation from the older genus Monachus.
