Cuniculidae

Cuniculidae is a rodent family containing a single living genus, Cuniculus, the pacas, ground dwelling herbivorous rodents of South and Central America within the caviomorph radiation. Pacas are large rodents with dotted and striped sides, short ears and barely visible tails, measuring 50 to 77 centimeters long and weighing 6 to 14 kilograms. The genus holds three species: the lowland paca, found from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, the mountain paca of the northern Andes and Paramo grasslands, and the disputed Cuniculus hernandezi.
