Thryonomyidae is a family of hystricognath rodents commonly known as cane rats, today represented by the single living genus Thryonomys and its two species, the greater cane rat and the lesser cane rat, found throughout sub Saharan Africa. The family dates to the Oligocene, roughly twenty three point seven million years ago, and was once more widespread, with fossil relatives known from India and Arabia alongside numerous extinct genera such as Paraphiomys, Epiphiomys and Gaudeamus.
