Zapodidae

Zapodidae, the jumping mice, is a rodent family found in North America and China comprising three genera, Eozapus, Napaeozapus and Zapus, with 11 recent species as of 2021. They are distinguished by elongated hind limbs, four pairs of cheek teeth per jaw, and a long tail making up roughly 60 percent of body length that aids balance during jumping, with five toes on each foot though the front first toe is rudimentary. The family was formerly grouped with birch mice and jerboas in Dipodidae before phylogenetic study split them into separate families within the superfamily Dipodoidea.
