Dasypodidae

Dasypodidae is a family of armadillos in the order Cingulata, with a fossil record extending from the Early Eocene to the present. Most of the family genera are extinct, and only one genus, Dasypus, survives today, with eight living species including the nine-banded armadillo; the family forms the sister clade to Chlamyphoridae within Cingulata. Armadillos are recognized for the banded, armor-like carapace that gives the group its name in multiple languages.
