Phyllostomidae

Mammal Families

Phyllostomidae, the New World leaf-nosed bats, is a large and ecologically diverse family of bats found from the southern United States through Central America and much of South America. Most species bear a fleshy nose-leaf used in echolocation, and the family is unusual for the breadth of its diets, which include insects, fruit, nectar and pollen, and in the case of the vampire bats, blood. This dietary diversity makes Phyllostomidae one of the most ecologically important bat families in Neotropical forests, particularly for pollination and seed dispersal.
