Nyctereutes

Nyctereutes is a genus of canids, family Canidae, known as raccoon dogs, comprising two extant species, the common raccoon dog and the Japanese raccoon dog, which diverged roughly 0.5 million years ago, alongside eight extinct species, for ten recognized species overall. The genus originated in northern China around 5.5 million years ago; living raccoon dogs range across Mongolia, the Russian Far East, China, Korea and Vietnam, with introduced populations across Europe, and are opportunistic feeders on small mammals, fish, birds, insects and some plant matter.
