Trogopterus

Trogopterus is a genus of flying squirrel containing the single species Trogopterus xanthipes, the complex-toothed flying squirrel, endemic to the Chinese provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Yunnan. It is identified by teeth that differ from those of other flying squirrels, a tuft of black hair below the base of each ear, grey-brown fur with a white underside and a reddish tinge on the face and tail, and grows to about 60 centimeters in total length, roughly half of which is tail. The species is listed as Near Threatened, its numbers reduced by habitat loss and hunting for food and traditional Chinese medicine.
