Rhinopomatidae

Mammal Families

Rhinopomatidae, the mouse-tailed bats, is a family of Old World bats containing a single genus, Rhinopoma, with three to six recognized species ranging from North Africa to Thailand and Sumatra in arid and semiarid country. They are small, 5 to 6 centimeters in body length and 6 to 14 grams in weight, with slim limbs, sand-colored fur, a simple nose-leaf with valvular nostrils, and a long, thin, hairless tail nearly as long as the rest of the body and not joined to the wing membrane. They roost in caves, buildings and structures such as the Egyptian pyramids, where they have sheltered for more than three thousand years.
