Salanoia

Salanoia is a genus of euplerid carnivoran in the family Eupleridae with two currently described species found in Madagascar. Species in the genus are mongoose-like, and their English common names have been revised in recent years, so that what was once called the brown-tailed mongoose is now known as the brown-tailed vontsira, following the Malagasy vernacular name vontsira that is also applied to the related genera Galidia and Galidictis. The genus name derives from salano, a local vernacular term for Salanoia concolor, and researchers have identified specimens at Lac Alaotra in Madagascar with distinct physical characteristics from S. concolor but genetic similarities suggesting a separate species.
