Atilax

Atilax is a genus of mongoose in the family Herpestidae containing a single living species, the marsh mongoose (Atilax paludinosus). The marsh mongoose is a solitary, nocturnal and semi-aquatic mammal that inhabits African wetlands and feeds on fish, crustaceans, frogs and small mammals. A single extinct species, Atilax mesotes, is known from fossils in South Africa and is thought to be ancestral to the living species. The genus was formally named in 1826 by the French naturalist Frederic Cuvier.
