Paracynictis

Paracynictis is a genus of mongoose in the family Herpestidae containing a single living species, Selous's mongoose (Paracynictis selousi), native to Southern Africa including Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. It measures 63 to 90 centimeters in total length with a tail of 28 to 43 centimeters and weighs roughly 1.4 to 2.0 kilograms, its body ranging from pale speckled grey to tawny grey with a pale underside, brown or black legs and a white-tipped tail. It is nocturnal, digs its own burrows, is typically solitary though pairs and females with young are occasionally seen, and is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List with no known threats and a wide distribution.
