Manidae is the only extant family of pangolins, placed in the order Pholidota. It comprises three living genera, Manis, Phataginus, and Smutsia, with eight recognized living species and several extinct species known from the fossil record extending back to the middle Eocene. Pangolins are covered in overlapping keratin scales rather than fur, and every living species is listed under CITES Appendix I, the highest level of international trade protection, reflecting the severe pressure of the illegal wildlife trade on the family.
