Hylobatidae is a family of apes commonly known as gibbons. The family historically contained a single genus but is now split into four extant genera and twenty species. Gibbons inhabit subtropical and tropical forests from eastern Bangladesh and northeast India through Southeast Asia and Indonesia, including the islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java.
