Aplodontiidae is a rodent family that today survives as a single living species, the mountain beaver, found only in North America, though roughly two dozen extinct genera are known from fossils spanning the Oligocene to the present in North America, the Oligocene to Miocene in Asia, and the Oligocene in Europe. The family may be the sister group of the squirrel family Sciuridae. Its one living species is not closely related to true beavers despite the common name.
