Calomyscidae is a family of small rodents commonly called mouse like hamsters, comprising the single genus Calomyscus and about eight living species found in Syria, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Despite the common name they are not true hamsters, lacking the cheek pouches, flank glands and short tail typical of hamsters, and they represent an early, distinct branch of mouse like rodents favoring rocky and semi mountainous desert habitat.
