Geomyidae is the family of pocket gophers, burrowing rodents endemic to North and Central America and numbering roughly forty one species. They take their name from fur lined external cheek pouches running from the mouth to the shoulders, used to carry food, and are known for extensive tunneling that can damage farms and gardens. Solitary animals with small eyes and short tails, they feed mainly on roots and other plant material gathered while digging.
