Cheracebus

Cheracebus is one of three genera of titi monkey, a group of New World primate in the subfamily Callicebinae of the family Pitheciidae, order Primates, established in 2016 with the type species Simia lugens. Members of the genus, particularly the type species Cheracebus lugens, are sometimes called widow titi monkeys. The name derives from the Latin chera, meaning widow, from Greek khera, combined with cebus, meaning long-tailed monkey, from Greek kebos. Historically all titi monkeys were classified in a single genus, Callicebus, until a 2016 revision recognized Cheracebus for the torquatus group of widow titis, Plecturocebus for the Amazonian and Chaco titis, and Callicebus sensu stricto for the Atlantic Forest species. The genus contains five species: the Lucifer titi monkey (Cheracebus lucifer), black titi monkey (Cheracebus lugens), Colombian black-handed titi monkey (Cheracebus medemi), red-headed titi monkey (Cheracebus regulus) and collared titi monkey (Cheracebus torquatus).
