Crossarchus

Mammal Genera

Crossarchus is a genus of mongoose in the family Herpestidae and subfamily Mungotinae, commonly called kusimanse or cusimanse. It comprises four small, highly social species found in the swamplands and forests of central and western Africa, including Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Sierra Leone, with some species extending into the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Angola, Benin, Cameroon and Nigeria. Crossarchus mongooses live in groups of 10 to 24 individuals organized into family units, forage during the day without maintaining permanent dens, carry and feed young unable to keep pace with the group, and keep cohesion through whistling calls as they move through dense forest understory.
