Ictidomys is a North American genus of ground squirrel in the tribe Marmotini of the squirrel family Sciuridae, named by J. A. Allen in 1877 with the type species Citellus tridecemlineatus. It contains three species: the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) of North America, the Mexican ground squirrel (Ictidomys mexicanus) of central Mexico, and the Rio Grande ground squirrel (Ictidomys parvidens) of Texas, New Mexico and northeastern Mexico. These species were formerly classified within the genus Spermophilus until molecular data showed that genus was not a natural, monophyletic grouping.
