Urocyon is a genus of canid found in the Western Hemisphere, comprising two living species, the gray fox and the island fox, along with the undescribed Cozumel fox, a small, critically endangered dwarf form found only on Cozumel Island, Mexico. Whole genome sequencing indicates Urocyon is the sister lineage to all other living canid genera, and fossils of a probable ancestor, Urocyon progressus, have been found in Kansas dating to the Upper Pliocene.
