Tremarctos

Tremarctos is a genus of bears, family Ursidae, comprising one living species, the spectacled or Andean bear, Tremarctos ornatus, and one extinct North American species, Tremarctos floridanus; it is the last surviving genus of the short-faced bear subfamily Tremarctinae. The living species inhabits the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, western Bolivia and northwestern Argentina, with rare records in eastern Panama, and is distinguished by light coloring around the chest, neck and face resembling spectacles, a comparatively short snout, a tall skull, a mostly herbivorous diet, and 52 chromosomes versus the 74 found in genus Ursus.
