Xenarthran Orders

The xenarthran orders are Cingulata and Pilosa. Cingulata holds the armadillos, and Pilosa holds the sloths of the suborder Folivora and the anteaters of the suborder Vermilingua. Xenarthrans radiated in South America during the Tertiary, when that continent was isolated by sea from other continents, and the living group has four families and 29 species that are mostly insectivores and herbivores of small to medium body size, up to around 60 kg. Armadillos, two-toed sloths, three-toed sloths and anteaters are the familiar kinds.
