Blackbuck

Mammals

The blackbuck is a species of antelope native to the open plains and grasslands of the Indian subcontinent, known for the striking two-tone coat of mature males, which darkens from tan to a deep blackish-brown on the back and flanks as they age while the underside remains bright white. Females and young males instead retain a fawn-colored coat throughout their lives. Males carry long, ringed, spiral horns that can exceed half a metre in length and are used both in displays and in fights for dominance and access to females during the breeding season. Among the fastest land animals in the world, the blackbuck relies on sustained speed rather than short bursts to outrun predators such as wolves and dogs across open terrain. Once common across the subcontinent, the species suffered severe declines from hunting and habitat loss in the twentieth century, but populations have since recovered significantly under legal protection in India, where the blackbuck also holds religious significance in Hindu tradition.
