Common Bottlenose Dolphin

Mammals

The common bottlenose dolphin is one of the most familiar and widely studied dolphin species, found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide, recognized by its curved mouthline, which gives the appearance of a permanent smile, and its short, stubby beak. It is highly intelligent and social, living in fluid groups called pods that can change membership frequently, and it uses echolocation to hunt fish and squid as well as a wide range of vocalizations, including signature whistles that function similarly to individual names. Bottlenose dolphins are found both in open ocean and closer to shore in bays and estuaries, and their adaptability across many habitats has kept the species common overall, classified as being of least concern, though some local populations face threats from pollution and fishing gear.
