Common Marmoset

The common marmoset, also called the white-tufted marmoset or white-tufted-ear marmoset, is a New World monkey that originally lived along the northeastern coast of Brazil, in the states of Piaui, Paraiba, Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Bahia. Through the release, both intentional and unintentional, of captive individuals since the 1920s, it has expanded its range into southeastern Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, where it has become an invasive species raising concern about genetic pollution of similar species such as the buffy-tufted marmoset, and about its predation on the nestlings and eggs of birds. Its whole genome was sequenced and published in 2014, making it the first New World monkey to have its genome sequenced.
