Greater Kudu

The greater kudu is a large woodland antelope native to eastern and southern Africa, among the tallest of the antelope species, with males carrying long, dramatically spiraled horns that can complete two and a half turns and are among the most prized trophies in African hunting traditions. Its coat is greyish to reddish-brown, marked with several thin white vertical stripes along the sides that help break up its outline among trees and brush. Greater kudu are browsers, feeding on leaves, shoots and fruit rather than grazing on grass, and they are shy, alert animals capable of leaping obstacles well over two metres high when startled. The species remains relatively widespread across protected areas of its range and is classified as being of least concern.

Narrow-bodied antelope with long legs, a coat ranging from brownish blue-grey to reddish brown, four to twelve vertical white stripes along the torso, and males bearing large horns with up to two and a half twists. 1
