Groundhog

The groundhog, also called the woodchuck, is a large ground squirrel native to eastern and central North America, a member of the marmot group best known in popular culture for the folk tradition of predicting the end of winter based on whether it sees its shadow when emerging from hibernation. It is a skilled burrower, digging extensive den systems used for shelter, raising young and hibernating through the winter months, during which its body temperature and heart rate drop dramatically to conserve energy. Groundhogs are herbivorous, feeding on grasses, clover and garden vegetables, which sometimes brings them into conflict with farmers and gardeners. The species remains common and adaptable across its range and is classified as being of least concern.
