The hooded skunk is found from the southwestern United States through Mexico and into Central America, in arid scrub, rocky canyons, and riparian areas. It is closely related to the striped skunk but has a longer, bushier tail and a distinctive ruff of longer fur around its neck that it can raise, and its black-and-white coloration is highly variable between individuals. It forages mainly at night for insects, small vertebrates, and fruit and remains widespread and unthreatened across most of its range.
