The lion is a large, powerfully built cat in the genus Panthera, today found in the wild only in Sub-Saharan Africa and a single remnant population in India. It has a broad-chested, muscular body, a short rounded head, and a dark tufted tail. The species is markedly sexually dimorphic: adult males grow substantially larger than females and develop a thick mane running from the head across the shoulders and chest, a feature unique among big cats.
