The Neotropical otter, also called the Neotropical river otter, ranges from northern Mexico through Central America and across most of South America, making it one of the most widely distributed otters in the Americas. It lives along fast-flowing rivers and streams as well as coastal waters, feeding chiefly on fish and crustaceans, and unlike some otter species it tends to be solitary outside of mother-offspring groups. It is considered Near Threatened, squeezed by deforestation, dam construction, and historical hunting for its pelt.
