The northern elephant seal, also called the northern sea elephant, is one of two living elephant seal species and a member of the true seal family Phocidae. Elephant seals take their name from their great size and from the male's large proboscis, and the species shows extreme sexual size dimorphism paired with a highly polygynous mating system in which a successful male can impregnate as many as fifty females in a single season.
