Northern Nail-tail Wallaby

The northern nail-tail wallaby, Onychogalea unguifera, is a macropod marsupial and the largest member of its genus, native to northern Australia from Cape York Peninsula through the Top End to the Kimberley region. It has a head and body length of 500 to 700 millimeters, a tail longer than its body at 600 to 740 millimeters, a standing height of about 0.65 meters, a weight of 5 to 9 kilograms, sandy or gingery fur with a creamy underside, unusually long ears of 80 to 92 millimeters, and a small nail-like structure beneath dark fur at the tip of its tail whose purpose is not known. It favors arid country dominated by tough tussock grasses or low shrubs, especially where clay soils meet sandy loam, and though patchily distributed across its wide range it is locally abundant in places.
