Short-finned pilot whale

Mammals

The short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) is one of two species in the genus Globicephala, alongside the long-finned pilot whale, and belongs to the oceanic dolphin family Delphinidae. It can reach up to 7.2 meters in length and 4,000 kilograms, making it the third largest oceanic dolphin, with newborns weighing about 60 kilograms; it has a black to dark grayish brown, bulbous headed body, a sickle shaped dorsal fin, lighter saddle and chin patches, and flippers about one sixth of its body length, shorter than those of the long-finned pilot whale, along with fewer teeth. It has a worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical oceans, with a global population estimated around 700,000 and a range that is shifting northward with warming seas, and hunts fast moving squid at depths around 700 meters, with dives recorded to as deep as 1,018 meters, acting as an apex predator.
