Siamang

Mammals

The siamang, scientifically Symphalangus syndactylus, is a black-furred, arboreal gibbon of tropical rainforest in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, and the only living species in the genus Symphalangus. It is the largest of the gibbons, reaching about one meter in height and up to 14 kilograms in weight, and is distinguished by webbed second and third toes on each foot and a large throat pouch, present in both sexes, that inflates to produce resonating calls. Fossils place siamangs as far back as the Middle Pleistocene, and captive individuals can live around 40 years. It is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and listed on CITES Appendix I, threatened mainly by habitat loss from palm oil production and deforestation, as well as the illegal pet trade.
