The striped hyena ranges across North and East Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, making it the most widely distributed of the hyena species, favoring arid and semi-arid habitats. It is a mostly solitary scavenger, though it will also hunt small prey, and its coat of dark vertical stripes and a long, erectile mane give it a distinctive appearance. It is classified as Near Threatened, declining because of persecution, habitat loss, and a shrinking prey base across much of its range.
