Home›Mammals›Bats (Chiroptera)GroupBats (Chiroptera)This group gathers Mammals subcategory members belonging to the order Chiroptera, the only mammals capable of true, sustained flight, achieved with a wing formed from a thin skin membrane stretched across a greatly elongated set of finger bones. It spans the larger fruit and nectar feeding bats of the Old World tropics, such as the flying foxes, which navigate largely by sight and smell, and the far more numerous smaller, mostly insect eating bats found on every continent except Antarctica, most of which navigate and hunt in darkness using echolocation, emitting high frequency calls and interpreting the returning echoes. A small number of species instead feed on blood, nectar, fish or small vertebrates, making Chiroptera, after the rodents, the second largest mammalian order by number of living species.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedViviparous (Live-Bearing) 2Browse ByAll Bats (Chiroptera)Bats (Chiroptera)23 entriesBats (Chiroptera)Filter Results23 entriesCommon GroupAllBats (Chiroptera) (23)Everyday GroupAllBats (Chiroptera) (23)HabitatAllBoreal Forest (1)Chaparral (1)Desert (2)Grassland (2)Riparian Zone (1)River (2)Savanna (2)Temperate Forest (2)Tropical Dry Forest (2)Tropical Rainforest (6)Xeric Shrubland (1)Where It LivesAllAfrica (7)Albania (1)Andorra (1)Argentina (1)Asia (1)Australia (1)Austria (1)Belgium (1)Belize (2)Bolivia (3)Bosnia and Herzegovina (1)Botswana (1)Brazil (6)Bulgaria (1)Chile (1)Colombia (7)Costa Rica (3)Croatia (1)Cuba (1)Cyprus (2)Czechia (1)Dominican Republic (1)Ecuador (6)El Salvador (2)Eswatini (1)France (1)Germany (1)Greece (1)Grenada (1)Guatemala (2)Guyana (5)Haiti (1)Honduras (2)Hungary (1)Ireland (1)Italy (1)Kazakhstan (1)Kyrgyzstan (1)Liechtenstein (1)Luxembourg (1)Malta (1)Mexico (5)Moldova (1)Monaco (1)Montenegro (1)Mozambique (1)Namibia (1)Netherlands (1)Nicaragua (3)North America (3)North Macedonia (1)Panama (3)Paraguay (1)Peru (5)Poland (1)Portugal (1)Romania (1)Russia (1)Serbia (1)Slovakia (1)Slovenia (1)South America (7)South Asia (5)Spain (2)Suriname (5)Switzerland (1)Tajikistan (1)Trinidad and Tobago (1)Turkey (2)Turkmenistan (1)Ukraine (1)United Kingdom (1)United States (3)Uzbekistan (1)Venezuela (7)Zimbabwe (1)Conservation StatusAllCritically Endangered (1)Data Deficient (2)Endangered (1)Least Concern (15)Near Threatened (4)DietAllFrugivore (6)Herbivore (2)Insectivore (13)Parasitic (1)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (20)Living or ExtinctAllYes (23)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (5)Disease Vector (2)Hunted or Fished (2)Natural Pest Control (4)Pollinator (2)CITES AppendixAllAppendix I (1)Appendix II (3)Appendix III (1)Not Listed (19)NatureServe RankAllG2 Imperiled (1)G3 Vulnerable (1)G4 Apparently Secure (1)EcosystemAllAmazon Rainforest (1)Cerrado (1)TaxonomyAllChiroptera (6)Emballonuridae (3)Molossidae (2)Phyllostomidae (5)Vespertilionidae (5)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 23African sheath-tailed batMammals3 linksAru flying foxMammals1 linkBlack myotisMammals1 linkChestnut Sac-winged BatMammals2 linksCuban fruit-eating batMammals1 linkDark fruit-eating batMammals4 linksEgyptian Fruit BatMammals2 linksFlying FoxMammals4 linksGeoffroy's Tailless BatMammals3 linksGray sac-winged batMammals1 linkGreat evening batMammals1 linkGreater Horseshoe BatMammals2 linksKitti's Hog-nosed BatMammals2 linksLittle Brown BatMammals3 linksLittle free-tailed batMammals3 linksLong-legged batMammals2 linksLong-snouted batMammals1 linkMyotis septentrionalisMammals3 linksPipistrellus raceyiMammals2 linksSeychelles fruit batMammals1 linkSilver-haired batMammals3 linksSinaloan mastiff batMammals3 linksVampire BatMammals2 linksSources1.
