The Chinese pangolin is a scaly, nocturnal, ant- and termite-eating mammal native to the forests and grasslands of southern China, Taiwan, and parts of northern Southeast Asia. Like all pangolins it is covered in overlapping keratin scales and curls into a tight ball when threatened, and it digs burrows for shelter rather than nesting in trees. It is one of the most heavily trafficked mammals on earth for its scales and meat and is classified as Critically Endangered.
