The western lowland gorilla is a subspecies of western gorilla found in the lowland tropical forests and swamps of central Africa, the most numerous and widespread of all gorilla subspecies, and the one most commonly seen in zoos worldwide. It is generally smaller and has a shorter, more brownish-grey coat than the mountain gorilla, and troops are typically led by a mature male known as a silverback for the patch of silver-grey fur that develops on his back with age. Western lowland gorillas are largely herbivorous, feeding on fruit, leaves, stems and bark, and live in stable family groups. Poaching, disease outbreaks including Ebola, and habitat loss from logging have caused sharp population declines, and the species is classified as critically endangered.
