The giant pangolin is the largest living pangolin species, found in the forests and savanna-forest mosaics of Central and West Africa. It can weigh over 30 kilograms and uses its powerful claws to dig into termite mounds and ant nests, sometimes collapsing large mounds to reach its prey. It is elusive and rarely studied in the wild, and like every pangolin species it is considered at serious risk from the international trade in scales and bushmeat that has made pangolins among the most trafficked mammals in the world.
