The northern buffed-cheeked gibbon, scientifically Nomascus annamensis and described in 2010, inhabits humid subtropical and seasonal tropical forest across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Males have a primarily black pelt that glistens silver in sunlight, a lighter brown chest, and deep golden-orange cheeks with a prominent crest, while females lack the crest and are orange-beige in color. It closely resembles the yellow-cheeked gibbon in appearance. Its holotype specimen is held at the Zoological Museum of Vietnam National University in Hanoi. It is listed as Endangered under IUCN criteria and protected under CITES Appendix I.
