The western hoolock gibbon, scientifically Hoolock hoolock, is found in Assam, Mizoram and Meghalaya in India, in Bangladesh, and in Myanmar west of the Chindwin River. Its numbers are estimated to have dropped from more than 100,000 individuals to fewer than 5,000, a decline of more than 90 percent since the 1980s, leaving the species entirely dependent on human action for its survival. It is listed as Endangered by the IUCN and protected under CITES Appendix I.
