The European jackal is a subspecies of the golden jackal found in Anatolia, the Caucasus and Southeast Europe, with a range that has been expanding westward into Central and Western Europe. It was first described by the French naturalist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire during the Morea expedition.
