It spans the horse family, Equidae, including the domestic and Przewalski's horse, the plains zebra, and the donkey, the rhinoceros family, including the white, black, Javan, Sumatran and Bornean rhinoceroses, and the tapir family, whose members retain a more primitive body plan closer to the group's common ancestor than either the horses or the rhinoceroses. Once a far larger and more diverse order, Perissodactyla has been reduced by extinction to these three surviving families, several of whose living species are themselves now critically endangered.FactsAll Odd-Toed Ungulates (Perissodactyla)SourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedViviparous (Live-Bearing) 2All Odd-Toed Ungulates (Perissodactyla)Filter Results10 entriesCommon GroupAllOdd-Toed Ungulates (Perissodactyla) (10)Everyday GroupAllOdd-Toed Ungulates (Perissodactyla) (10)HabitatAllCloud Forest (1)Desert (1)Grassland (2)Savanna (1)Steppe (1)Tropical Rainforest (3)Where It LivesAllAfrica (3)Australia (1)Botswana (3)Eswatini (3)Kazakhstan (2)Mozambique (3)Namibia (3)Norway (1)South Africa (2)South Asia (4)Ukraine (1)Zimbabwe (3)Conservation StatusAllCritically Endangered (4)Endangered (3)Near Threatened (2)DietAllHerbivore (9)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (10)Living or ExtinctAllYes (10)ThreatsAllBiological Resource Use (1)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (3)Domesticated (2)Hunted or Fished (3)Used in Traditional Medicine (3)CITES AppendixAllAppendix I (7)Not Listed (3)EcosystemAllBorneo Rainforest (1)Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (1)Eurasian Steppe (1)Gobi Desert (1)Kruger National Park (2)Mongolian Steppe (1)Serengeti (2)Sumatran Lowland Rainforest (1)TaxonomyAllEquus (2)Perissodactyla (7)Rhinocerotidae (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 10Black RhinocerosMammalsBornean rhinocerosMammalsDonkeyMammalsJavan RhinocerosMammalsMalayan TapirMammalsPlains ZebraMammalsPrzewalski's HorseMammalsSumatran RhinocerosMammalsWhite RhinocerosMammalsWild horseMammalsSources1.
