Home›Mammals›Pinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus)›All Pinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus)Browse ByAll Pinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus)This group gathers Mammals subcategory members belonging to the clade Pinnipedia, the fin footed marine carnivorans, whose limbs have been reshaped into flippers for swimming while most species still return to land or sea ice to breed, molt and rest. It spans the earless or true seals, which move on land by awkwardly flexing their whole body since their hind flippers cannot rotate forward, the eared seals, the sea lions and fur seals, which can rotate their hind flippers under the body to walk more like a land mammal, and the walrus, the only living member of its own family, recognized by its long tusks used in dominance displays and to help haul its body onto ice. Pinnipeds are themselves nested within the broader carnivoran family tree, most closely related to bears and to the weasel family, though this atlas keeps them in their own group given their fully distinct, water adapted body plan.FactsAll Pinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus)SourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedViviparous (Live-Bearing) 2All Pinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus)Filter Results22 entriesCommon GroupAllPinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus) (22)Everyday GroupAllPinnipeds (Seals, Sea Lions and the Walrus) (22)HabitatAllCoral Reef (1)Desert (1)Freshwater (1)Intertidal Zone (3)Marine (6)Neritic Zone (1)Open Ocean (7)River (2)Sea Ice (5)Where It LivesAllAfrica (2)Argentina (2)Australia (4)Belgium (7)Brazil (3)Canada (3)Chile (2)Colombia (1)Denmark (6)Ecuador (1)France (1)Germany (1)Greece (1)Ireland (1)Japan (1)Kazakhstan (1)Mexico (4)Morocco (1)Mozambique (1)Namibia (1)Netherlands (2)New Zealand (5)North America (13)Norway (7)Poland (3)Portugal (1)Russia (4)South Africa (2)South America (2)South Asia (5)Spain (4)Sweden (3)Turkmenistan (1)Ukraine (4)United Kingdom (1)United States (1)Uruguay (2)Conservation StatusAllEndangered (2)Least Concern (13)Near Threatened (3)Vulnerable (4)DietAllCarnivore (2)Filter Feeder (1)Piscivore (19)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (2)Marine (20)Marine and Freshwater (1)Terrestrial (2)Living or ExtinctAllYes (22)ThreatsAllBiological Resource Use (1)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (1)Hunted or Fished (20)No Significant Interaction with Humans (1)CITES AppendixAllAppendix I (2)Appendix II (2)Appendix III (2)Not Listed (18)NatureServe RankAllG3 Vulnerable (2)G4 Apparently Secure (4)G5 Secure (7)EcosystemAllAntarctic Peninsula (4)Arctic Ocean (5)Caspian Sea (1)Deep Sea (1)Gulf of California (1)Lake Baikal (1)Mediterranean Basin (1)Ross Sea (2)Svalbard (2)TaxonomyAllCallorhinus (1)Mirounga (1)Odobenidae (1)Otariidae (2)Phoca (2)Phocidae (12)Pusa (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 22Baikal SealMammalsBearded SealMammalsCalifornia Sea LionMammalsCaspian SealMammalsCrabeater SealMammalsGrey SealMammalsHarbor SealMammalsHarp SealMammalsHawaiian Monk SealMammalsHooded SealMammalsLeopard SealMammalsMediterranean Monk SealMammalsNorthern Elephant SealMammalsNorthern fur sealMammalsRibbon SealMammalsRinged SealMammalsRoss SealMammalsSouthern Elephant SealMammalsSpotted SealMammalsSteller Sea LionMammalsWalrusMammalsWeddell SealMammalsSources1.
